The Sona Group is a premier business group in India. The origins of the group can be traced back to pre-Independence India. The Group was founded by Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagaraja Chettiar, who was moved by the plight of tea garden workers in the country. He was drawn to the freedom movement and set out to empower his fellow countrymen to enhance India’s economic development. He aimed to achieve this lofty goal through education and industrial development resulting in the employment of Indians. Since its inception in the 1920s, The Sona Valliappa Group has pioneered India’s growth in the fields of agriculture, textiles, real estate, IT, education and research.

Anadhanam is an initiative of the Valliappa Foundation that was developed under its Social Impact Innovations and Waste to Wealth Programs. It is a technology-powered platform that aims to eradicate hunger worldwide by streamlining donations that can be in the form of food, rations, or cash, and links donors with trusted non-profit organizations and the hungry. It comprises a web platform on which to run campaigns, raise resources, and plan project operations and a mobile app to monitor last-mile distribution.

Sona FM 107.8 Community Radio is an initiative of the Valliappa Foundation to promote a sustainable community for the people in and around the Salem district. As part of its Community Engagement Program, this channel is “of the people, for the people, by the people” and explores local culture, music, sports, language, personalities, social and economic issues. By providing a space and platform for debate, dialogue, and discourse the community is empowered daily.
