Sona College of Technology Earns Dual National Recognition for Faculty Excellence and Research Leadership
Sona College of Technology, Salem, has once again affirmed its reputation as one of India’s leading institutions for academic and research excellence by securing two highly prestigious national distinctions.
The college has been ranked number one in faculty performance under the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) for the January to May 2025 cycle, outperforming more than 7,000 colleges across the country. This marks the sixth time that Sona College of Technology has received the top rank, having consistently placed in the top 3 since the inception of this award category. The college has also been recognised with the NPTEL Local Chapter Star (LC STAR) status for the second time, an honour granted to institutions that demonstrate consistent performance and maintain a position within the Top 100 in national NPTEL rankings since 2017.
Highlighting the faculty's commitment, Mr. Chocko Valliappa, Vice Chairman of Sona College of Technology, expressed immense pride in their achievement. He said, “We are proud to reward our faculty who have propelled Sona to the top national rank in NPTEL. Their dedication ensures our students receive world-class education.” Adding to this remarkable feat, the college has once again been recertified as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India. This is the fourth SIRO certification the college has received since 2016. The recognition reflects the institution’s sustained commitment to research and innovation, with 36 active R&D centres leading scientific development aligned with national priorities for self-reliance.
Speaking about the college’s integrated academic and research vision, Principal Prof. Dr. SRR Senthilkumar shared, “Sona College’s commitment to academic excellence is deeply rooted in faculty development through NPTEL and innovation-led research across our 36 R&D centres, aligning with national priorities for self-reliance.” Among these research centres is Sona SPEED, which has contributed to key national space missions including ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 and Gaganyaan. Between 2020 and 2023, the college filed 423 patents, of which 324 have been published, and 44 granted, further underlining its innovation-led focus.
For the academic year 2023–24, it has been ranked among the top 7 private engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu and the top 50 nationally, based on independent research studies. These national accolades reinforce Sona College’s mission to deliver high-quality, forward-looking education that empowers future leaders.
