Sona College of Technology Leads the Way in Sustainable Fashion Innovation
The Department of Fashion Technology at Sona College of Technology is establishing a strong presence in sustainable fashion innovation, cutting-edge textile research, and technical skill development. Keeping its philosophy of 'From Loom to Label' at the center, they assist their students by providing lessons ranging from the basics of fabric manufacturing and textile engineering to the latest in design technology and fashion innovation.
The department is leading over six research projects in areas like technical textiles, assistive tech for differently abled women, cotton waste upcycling, and loom waste minimisation, with ₹5 crore in funding from NTTM, SIDBI, and DST. It collaborates internationally on cutting-edge research like the FIBRE project, focused on smart healthcare textiles with the University of Toronto. Its NBA-accredited BTech programme holds AICTE-CII Mentor status, offering experiential learning through internships and industry visits.
With a focused curriculum in areas like Fashion Design, CAD, Sustainable Textiles, and 3D Virtual Fitting, over 60% of faculty hold PhDs in advanced textile domains. Mr. Chocko Valliappa, Vice Chairman of Sona College of Technology, stated, “By seamlessly blending technology and cutting-edge research with fashion and design, the Fashion Technology department has emerged as a cradle for industry-ready professionals, achieving 100% placement for every graduating batch over the last 17 years.”
It has secured eight granted patents out of 24 filed, including an assistive sewing machine for women with locomotor disabilities that generated ₹5 lakh in revenue. With over 250 research papers published in Scopus and SCI-indexed journals, many co-authored by undergraduates, students have excelled in national contests like Smart India Hackathon 2024. A strong start-up culture is fostered through MSME-supported ventures in sustainable fashion. Graduates are placed in top firms such as Aditya Birla, H&M, Decathlon, and Shahi Exports, with many alumni in global leadership roles or pursuing higher studies.
